Vice President Christian Schmitz-Justen from Cologne's Higher Regional Court Visits Taiwan's Judicial Yuan
On June 5, 2023, Christian Schmitz-Justen, Vice President of the Higher Regional Court of Cologne, visited the Judicial Yuan and was received by President Hsu Tzong-Li. Justice Tsai Ming-Cheng, Justice Jan Sheng-Lin and Taiwan High Court President Gao Jin-Zhi were also in attendance. During the meeting, they exchanged opinions regarding the judicial system, its operational status and direction for reform. Following this discussion, Vice President Christian Schmitz-Justen delivered a speech titled “Judge Autonomy and Judicial Accountability”, where he delved into how German Judges’ ethical standards perceive the actions judges are permitted to do today, including behaviors such as drunk driving and involvement in political activities. The lecture was expertly translated by Professor Chang Yeong-Ming from National University of Kaohsiung.
