Deputy Secretary-General Mei-Ying Wang Meets Dr. Alejandro Ponce, Executive Director of the World Justice Project
On January 29, 2026, Deputy Secretary-General Mei-Ying Wang received Dr. Alejandro Ponce, Executive Director of the World Justice Project (WJP), and Dr. Srirak Plipat, Regional Director for Asia Pacific. Also in attendance were Director-General Tso-Cheng Wu of the Department of Judicial Administration, Director-General Ding-Yah Wu of the Public Information Department, Director-General Min Chen of the Department of Statistics, Judge Yu-Jen Lu of the Criminal Department, Senior Executive Officer Wen-Yin Chang of the Department of Statistics, and Executive Officer Cheng-Yu Hsu of the Public Information Department. Interpretation for the meeting was provided by Deputy Director-General Doreen Tu and Secretary Kai-Yu Chiu of the Department of Judicial Administration.
Deputy Secretary-General Wang began by introducing the Judicial Yuan and outlining the recent judicial reforms. She emphasized that although Taiwan has not yet been included in the Rule of Law Index initiated by the WJP, Taiwan has performed strongly in various internationally recognized indicators. She also expressed the Judicial Yuan’s hope for further exchanges and cooperation with the WJP. Dr. Alejandro Ponce expressed appreciation for these remarks, noting that the WJP has been working on the Rule of Law Index for years and is committed to strengthening the global culture of the rule of law in cooperation with countries across the world, while also promoting constructive dialogue across different sectors. The Judicial Yuan, he emphasized, upholds the belief of “justice for the people,” which echoes the WJP’s “people-centered approach to justice,” demonstrating that both sides share common values and goals. He expressed hope for future cooperation. The two sides then discussed issues related to the Rule of Law Index, including the survey methodology, implementation, data processing, and how the results are applied in policy. The Judicial Yuan and the WJP look forward to further exchanges and cooperation to advance the development of the rule of law.
