The Judicial Yuan Held the “International Symposium on Participation of Citizen Judges in Taiwan and Japan” to Learn from the Japanese Experiences of Lay Judges (saiban-in) Institution

It has been a year since the implementation of the system of civil participation in criminal trials. The Citizen Judges Act in Taiwan referred to some Japanese experiences in criminal litigation and the lay judge system. To promote a deeper understanding of the evolution of the Japanese lay judge system, both in terms of regulations and practices, the Judicial Yuan and the Judges Academy jointly held the “2024 International Symposium on Participation of Citizen Judges in Taiwan and Japan” on February 26-27, 2024. Seven scholars from the University of Tokyo and Waseda University, Japan, are invited to talk about the operation and academic development of the Japanese lay judge system. The result of this symposium will serve as important references for Taiwan’s system of civil participation in criminal trials.
